Elder Abuse Defense

Every year, many elderly people find themselves the victims of abuse and exploitation by caregivers, family members and others. This abuse can take many forms.

Physical Abuse: The most common form, this often occurs between the victim and a caregiver, often a family member charged with caring for the victim.

Financial Abuse: A frequent companion to physical abuse, this can occur where the suspect gains control of the victim's finances, persuading them to relinquish passwords, account numbers and often signing powers of attorney which are abused to the detriment of the elderly victim.

Neglect: One of the most insidious because of the difficulty of proof, neglect can accompany financial elder abuse and often goes unreported because the elderly victim is afraid that discovery will bring shame and, tragically, the loss of the abusers "care".

While all of these scenarios are tragic, criminal investigations by police agencies can turn what amounts to a breakdown in a relationship into a major criminal filing, which may cost the accused his or her freedom, while the root cause of the conflict goes undetected as the police focus on the most obvious and ignore the underlying family dynamic.
